Syrah Goes Mainstream
If you asked California vintners 20 years ago which grape they thought would be the next big thing in wine from the Golden State, many would have answered Syrah. Of course, no one saw the movie Sideways coming and the dramatic affect it would have on Pinot Noir throughout the California Central Coast and the wine industry as a whole. After some time away from the spotlight and being grown by only the Rhone Rangers and a few other innovative vineyard owners, Syrah is gaining wide spread acceptance within the wine industry. Many winemakers appreciate that the grape can grow well in both warm climates and cooler ones and they especially like that the grape can create stand alone wines, or be blended with any number of other grapes being grown on their property, especially Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and even with a light touch, Sangiovese. Frankly speaking, it’s an exciting time in the wine industry if you’re a Syrah fan.
